Mary Anne Steele began dancing at Johnson’s Dance Studio at age three, and continued on to dance with Owensboro Dance Theatre through high school. She is a graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School and Centre College where she studied history, religion, and archaeology. After working several years in archaeology, she took a leap of faith and moved to the Caribbean in 2005. Falling in love with the salt life through sailing and scuba diving, she opened a sailing and snorkeling charter business on St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Then came the 2017 storm season when two category 5 hurricanes blew her back home to Owensboro. She is grateful to be back in her hometown, cultivating old friendships while establishing roots for her young family. She is an active realtor with Home Realty as well as the Executive Director of Owensboro Dance Theatre. Her lifelong passion for the arts and ODT coupled with her business acumen and interest in promoting arts education will serve her well as she takes the reins at ODT.
Joy began dance studies in Omaha, Nebraska and continued in Indianapolis, Indiana. During high school, she danced professionally with Marge Garner's Performing Arts Company; while studying with Betty Stephens, She earned a Bachelor of Science in Modern Dance form Indiana University, while performing with the I.U. Dance Theatre. Mrs. Johnson was also a member of the I.U. Women's Gymnastics Team in 1969-70. Summers were spent studying at Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago.
In 1982 Mrs. Johnson was one of the founding artistic directors of the Owensboro Dance Theatre, Inc., a 501(c) 3 non- profit dance company dance company based in Owensboro, KY. Mrs. Johnson taught jazz for the 1995 Governor's School for the Arts and is currently regional Director of the Jazz Dance World Congress in Chicago. Numerous students of Mrs. Johnson have gone on to pursue careers in dance, including professional dancers with companies such as Louisville Ballet, Lexington Ballet, St Louis and Indianapolis Ballets, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Radio City Rockettes, Flamenco Louisville, and Merce Cunningham, New York City. Others received Bachelor and Master Degrees in Dance Education from recognized Universities and are now teaching.
This former ODT member attended Western Kentucky University as a dance major, company member and soloist with the WKU Dance Company. In 2013 she accompanied WKU Professor Erica Rivera to assist and perform in Chicago and the Dumbo Dance Festival in New York City with the L2 Dance Company. Jaysie received her certification in the basic level of the Giordano Dance Technique and is delighted to be ODT's Artistic Assistant Director. Jaysie also teaches at Johnson's Dance Studio, educating in jazz, ballet, tap, and contemporary.
Jennie is a former ODT company member and 2001 graduate from Governors School for the Arts. She graduated with honors from University of Louisville with a B.S. in Biology and continued her education at University of Louisville School of Medicine with an emphasis in Anatomy and Physiology. While in Louisville she extended her dance education with classes for Louisville Ballet and Art! Art! Barking Dog Dance Company! She attended workshops in Atlanta and Chicago and she is a certified educator for all levels of the Giordano Dance Technique. Jennie also shares her love of dance as an instructor in jazz, ballet, tap, and contemporary for Johnson's Dance Studio in Owensboro, KY.
