Who is Mother Ginger??

Mother Ginger, In Owensboro Dance Theatre’s production of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker,” is the very definition of a crowd pleaser. In fact, she brings her own crowd, the Pollichinelles: Apprentice Company dancers who appear on stage. Some arrive concealed under that stadium-sized skirt (which conceals a wooden and metal frame) and emerge to perform a charming vignette. What makes Mother Ginger so special and beloved to an audience of over 3,000 community youth and 1,500 adults? Along with his fellow cast members of 200 community dancers? The trick is to have fun with it. He must let go of his inhibitions a little bit, kind of act the fool, and put himself in a situation where he’s going to be a little embarrassed. If you’re in the “Nutcracker” audience this season, tear your gaze away for a moment from those dancing Pollichinelles and watch Mother Ginger, looking over them and having a wonderful time — and so, likely, is the man performing her.

Where does my donation go?

The Mother Ginger contest is a fundraiser for Owensboro Dance Theatre, a non-profit pre-professional dance company in Western Kentucky, designed to unify our community through the art of dance. ODT serves over 39,000 community members annually through performance opportunities and many diverse outreach service programs. Through its programming, ODT reignites the soul and improves quality of life through the art of dance, serving all regardless of age, race, gender, or ability. ODT serves individuals, ages 3 to 103, with its outreach programs that highlight the importance of art for arts sake in the schools and bring the healing benefits of dance therapy to individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's. Your donation ensures the art of dance can continue to thrive through ODT, helping us to continue changing lives...one dance at a time.
